Paging Systems

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I have my Paging System hooked up to my Telephone System?
Yes, you can. Your intercom / loudspeaker paging system will be connected directly to your telephone system (whether it's Nortel / Avaya / NEC / Toshiba / Mitel / Panasonic), via the paging port, using a 70 volt / 8 ohm paging amplifier.

  • Can I make voice pages using my telephone's handset, instead of a paging microphone on a stand?
You can use any of your telephone handsets to make announcements on your paging system. This eliminates the need for an awkward looking microphone.

  • What's the difference between a one-way intercom & a two-way intercom system?
The one-way intercom is for announcements within an office, plant, or warehouse loudspeaker paging system. The two-way intercom / paging speaker is used for area's where someone may need to reply to the announcement, or have a two way conversation on a overhead speaker such as lunch rooms, class rooms, computer server rooms, and other common area's such as warehouse doors.

  • What's the difference between half-duplex & full-duplex intercom systems?
A half-duplex speakerphone works by allowing someone to say something while pressing a talk buttom and it works well until both people talk at the same time. Pressing the button only allows one person to talk at a time. A full-duplex system allows for a free flowing conference, where both parties can talk freely without any conversation delays or restrictions.

  • What size speaker should I use for a standard sized room? What size of speaker should I use for a large room, like an auditorium or gymnasium?
Quality office paging speakers have an adjustable pot / reostat that can be adjusted from a 1/2 watt output up to 5 watt output. For large open areas, such as warehouses / plant environents, should have a blowhorn (fluted) type paging speaker and this can be adjusted from 5 watts up to 30 watts, by using the adjustment dial / pot.

  • What's the difference between an intercom system and a basic paging system?
Intercom systems are a directed conversation to an individual telephone, wall, or door intercom. But, Paging systems are for general loud speaker announcements throughout the entire office complex, and can still be divided up to individual zones. (such as warehouses, accounting, administration departments, or the entire complex)

  • Can I have my paging system password protected?
We may not be able to use a password to protect a paging system but we can only allow pages to be made by entering an access key code first, on the telephone set's keypad. Only people who know the code can make announcements.

  • Why is there a background noise / or high pitched squealing noise at times, whenever someone uses the paging system?
This is called the Larson Effect - If the microphone can hear the speaker then it causes a howling effect, also known as feedback. The close proximity of the overhead loud speaker to the paging telephone causes the feedback, so you should simply relocate the speaker and the telphone set further away from each other, or delete permissions for paging from that particular telephone. You can also install a confidencer telephone handset that eliminates feedback from overhead speakers through the telephone handset.

  • Do I have a choice of Page Alert Tones, and/or the option of not having it at all?
Yes, you can have an upgraded paging amplifier emit alert tones, beeps, & chimes before the actual voice announcement. ie. airports, or bus stations commonly have this feature enabled.

  • Can I have a paging system outside? Do I need waterproof or some sort of outdoor speakers?
Waterproof loudspeaker paging horns are available for all outside environments, even included in wet wash down area's such as food prep operations or showers in firehalls.
