Voice Cabling - Professional Telephone Technicians
Frequently asked questions:
- I need phone lines in my office... How do I get Bell lines into my office?
Your 1st step will be to contact a service provider and order your lines (Bell, Primus, Allstream, Navigata, Rogers, etc). Your 2nd step is to contact a third-party installer, like CTT Telcom, and we will install a demarcation cable from the common "Bell" riser into your suite, and to your phone equipment. After this has been completed, Bell will then deliver the lines to site on the target date, and then leave them in the common riser. We'll then come into your office(s) and install your new lines into your suite using the demarcation cable that we ran earlier. Finally, we'll program your lines to your phone system.
- What is a demarcation cable?
A demarcation cable is a copper trunk cable that goes from the common riser, in your building, to your suite and to your telephone closet or server room. It usually consists of a 8 pair, 12 pair, or 25 pair cable. The demarcation cable will be the entry point for your analogue and digital lines from Bell, or another 2nd Tier Line reseller such as Primus, Navigata, Allstream, or Rogers.
- Can I have voice & data on one cable?
We don't recommend doing this unless you're using a VoIP phone system, that's connected to your computer. Splitting cables is a disorganized, and unsafe way of using less cables.
- Why should I have a telephone technician install my lines instead of an electrician?
From our experience, electricians don't understand industry standards and/or the basic principles of data transfer. Therefore, they don't use the proper methods for the installation of network cabling systems. For example, some electricians run network cables beside electrical cables and this produces an electrical interference which can be heard as a low hum on phone lines or an intermittent distortion of signals on PCs. We've also seen electricians splicing network lines which causes data transfer problems, slow bandwidth speeds. Our telecom network technicians understand the principles of data transfer, are certified, use approved methods, and use certified equipment. We also audit scan each cable with an HP Wirescope, which is something most electricians don't have. Our methods are 100% proven, reliable, and we offer a 15 year warranty on all of our network cable connections.
- Why am I hearing static and choppiness on my phone lines?
There's a few reasons for this: 1. There's a ground hum on the line 2. Connections are exposed to moisture (external street box) 3. Choppiness is usually heard on VoIP phone lines. This happens because of poor system bandwidth provided to the telephone circuit or when sharing data lines with VoIP equipment & phones.
- What solution do we recommend for standard phone lines?
We recommend Cat 3 solutions. This provides a reliable solution at a reasonable cost. You can also split pairs, on the cable, for individual lines. You'll also save money by using Bix Blocks, which are still industry standard, and using the older infrastructure in the building provided by Bell, or any other service provider (ie. Allstream, Rogers, Primus, etc)
- Can voice cables be installed in server racks?
Yes, we can use Category 5 Panels, designed for server racks, to enable your technician to have a plug and play system, using patch cords. Standard phone systems will be installed outside the rack, but we can mount your phone system in the rack using a predesigned bracket.
- Can I mount my phone system into my server rack?
Most telephone systems mount to a wall backboard, but some customers would prefer the telephone system to be inside their server racks or cabinets. This is not a problem, we can supply and install a simple propriety bracket that supports the telephone system, when mounted inside the server rack or cabinets.
- What is the most cost effective phone solution for small businesses?
Still to date, the most cost effective small business telephone solution is the Nortel Meridian Telephone System and it has been for almost 20 years. This system is used by nearly 80% of the marketplace, as their business phone system.
